Young People and transport in rural areas
It
is often difficult for
rural youth to have access to transport. This study, carried
out by Pamela Storey and Julia Brannen at the Thomas Coram Research Unit, Institute of Education, examines young people's
experience of transport in rural areas. Three representative cross-sections of
young people aged between 15 and 24 and living in rural locations in South West
England were studied. Some results of their studies show that Young people need
transport to get education and work, and to some extent, to maintain a social life.

What services for young couples in mountain areas?
“Having
interesting job opportunities for both partners is a pre-condition for settling
of working age people in mountain areas, but it is not sufficient. Young couple
need education and training
services for their children.”

High quality education in mountains? It’s possible!
Mountain is
a place to relax and recharge your batteries but don’t forget that there you
can also find high quality education to prepare yourself to enter the job
market!
Several
mountain regions have already invested in offering a large variety of training
courses, aimed to high school students.
For example, the university annex of Saragossa in the province of Teruel (Spain) has developed classes in car maintenance, electricity, management and computing, attended by many young people and giving them the chance to work locally.

The province of Teruel offers university courses too,
such as the training class on palaeontology, aimed to young curators and
restorers under 25.

Innovative rural learning to counter youth depopulation in Slovenia's countryside
This innovative LEADER project from the
area around Laško, Slovenia, set up a network of new learning facilities in
rural areas to develop young people’s deeper understanding of, and hopefully interest
in, rural lifestyles. Encouraging young people to appreciate the pecularities of
rural life was at the same time a way to counter European actual trend toward
rural depopulation. And you, have you a similar project in your village/ county? Don't hesitate to share your experience with us!
