Innovative rural learning to counter youth depopulation in Slovenia's countryside

This innovative LEADER project from the area around Laško, Slovenia, set up a network of new learning facilities in rural areas to develop young people’s deeper understanding of, and hopefully interest in, rural lifestyles. Encouraging young people to appreciate the pecularities of rural life was at the same time a way to counter European actual trend toward rural depopulation. And you, have you a similar project in your village/ county? Don't hesitate to share your experience with us!

A lot of initiatives were developed: youth meetings about about rural develpment topics (e. g. relationship between agriculture, nature and food) to identify different youth target groups' needs and innovative curricula for kindergardens and schools, based on the meetings’ topics. At the same time, a network of host business (farm, forest and other rural heritage services) was set up to help young people in their professional integration.
38 locations have now been networked by the project which undertook 60 different training sessions to ensure all business hosts knew how to provide effective training targeted at young adults, school pupils and kindergarten children.
The projetc focused on building business partners cooperation to increase rural areas' attractiveness for young people as a place where they could live, work and visit.

If you want to know more on the project, you can see the European Network for the development of rural areas database.
